Know exactly when you're ready.

Your Readiness Score updates every time you study, tracking mastery across Professional Practice and Engineering Law. Book your exam when the score says you're ready — not a day sooner, not a week later.

“I stopped guessing whether I was ready. The readiness score told me when to book, and I passed the NPPE on the first try.”

What Is the NPPE (National Professional Practice Examination)?

The NPPE — the National Professional Practice Examination — is a standardised exam required by every provincial and territorial engineering regulator in Canada. It is the mandatory step between an engineering or geoscience degree and a P.Eng. or P.Geo. licence.

The NPPE consists of 110 multiple-choice questions administered in a 2.5-hour online proctored session. It is scored on a pass/fail basis, with candidates required to demonstrate minimum competency across both tested domains. Exam fees range from $200 to $330 CAD depending on the province. The approximate pass rate is 70–80%.

The exam is administered multiple times per year through provincial regulators such as APEGA (Alberta), PEO (Ontario), Engineers Nova Scotia, and others. Candidates register directly with their regulator. For scheduling guidance, see NPPE exam dates.

NPPE Pro is an independent preparation platform — it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or administered by any official exam body or regulator. For official exam registration, candidates should contact their provincial or territorial regulator.

NPPE Exam Topics: Professional Practice & Engineering Law

The NPPE syllabus covers two core domains. NPPE Pro's adaptive system organises study sessions around both.

⚖️

Professional Practice

Ethics, professional obligations, liability, regulation of the engineering and geoscience professions, conflict of interest, and duty to the public. Primary reference: Canadian Professional Engineering and Geoscience: Practice and Ethics (Andrews et al.).

📜

Engineering Law

Contract law, tort law (duty of care, negligence), intellectual property, labour law, and business structures. Primary reference: Practical Law of Architecture, Engineering, and Geoscience (Samuels & Sanders).

How NPPE Pro Prepares You

NPPE Pro is a gamified study platform built specifically for the NPPE exam. Instead of passively re-reading hundreds of textbook pages, it uses an adaptive learning engine to identify your weak topics and focus your study time where it matters most.

Using spaced repetition, exam-style practice questions, and a structured learning path, NPPE Pro turns overwhelming study material into manageable, bite-sized sessions. Most candidates study in as little as 15 minutes a day and still make measurable progress.

Developed by Certnova and the team behind CBA Pro, NPPE Pro's methodology is informed by competency-based assessment research at competencybasedassessment.ca.

Frequently Asked Questions About the NPPE Exam

What does NPPE stand for?

NPPE stands for the National Professional Practice Examination. It is Canada’s standardised exam covering professional practice, ethics, and engineering law. NPPE Pro is an independent preparation platform for this exam.

Who needs to take the NPPE in Canada?

Anyone applying for a P.Eng. (Professional Engineer) or P.Geo. (Professional Geoscientist) licence in any Canadian province or territory must pass the NPPE. This includes internationally-trained engineers, recent graduates, and candidates transferring between provinces. Registration is handled by regulators such as APEGA (Alberta), PEO (Ontario), Engineers Nova Scotia, and others.

How many questions are on the NPPE exam?

The NPPE consists of 110 multiple-choice questions. Candidates have 2.5 hours (150 minutes) to complete the exam. It is administered online in a proctored environment.

What topics does the NPPE cover?

The NPPE assesses two broad domains: Professional Practice (ethics, professional obligations, liability, regulation of the profession) and Engineering Law (contract law, tort law, intellectual property, labour law, business structures). The syllabus draws from two main textbooks: “Canadian Professional Engineering and Geoscience: Practice and Ethics” by Andrews et al. and “Practical Law of Architecture, Engineering, and Geoscience” by Samuels & Sanders.

How much does the NPPE cost?

NPPE exam fees vary by province and typically range from $200 to $330 CAD. The fee is set by each provincial or territorial regulator, not by NPPE Pro. For current fees, candidates should contact their regulator directly.

What is the NPPE pass rate?

The NPPE has an approximate pass rate of 70–80%, depending on the session. The exam is scored on a pass/fail basis. Candidates must achieve a minimum competency level across both the Professional Practice and Engineering Law sections.

What textbooks should I study for the NPPE?

The two primary references are “Canadian Professional Engineering and Geoscience: Practice and Ethics” (Andrews et al.) covering ethics and professional regulation, and “Practical Law of Architecture, Engineering, and Geoscience” (Samuels & Sanders) covering contract law, tort, IP, and labour law. NPPE Pro’s adaptive system is structured around these textbook topics to help candidates study efficiently.
